“CAMBS DEVELOPERS IGNORANT OF KNOWLEDGE INDUSTRIES’ NEEDS”

For a place that prides itself on being an international centre for sunrise industries, Cambridge’s property provision for high tech start-ups is woefully inadequate claims Dr Darrin Disley of Horizon Discovery, whose medical research company has experienced considerable difficulty in finding suitable accommodation in the city.

“Horizon has found it frustrating working with property developers and landlords who do not understand either the operational requirements or the financial restraints of a young biotech company trying to run from profits and build a long term sustainable business” he says.

“To establish our main facility in Cambridge has been problematic to say the least. The good news is we have found an excellent landlord in SEGRO, who has been both welcoming and accommodating, and we move into our purpose built accommodation in November”.

Other high tech companies at IQ Cambridge agree. “The ability to create the individual working environment we require for our employees – and make a lasting impression on our visitors – were key factors in our move to IQ Cambridge” says Vikki Gibson of Airvana, which provides the infrastructure products used by mobile broadband operators.

Flexible accommodation and leasing arrangements provided a further incentive for fellow occupiers NEC Philips, Angio Dynamics and Airvana Ltd.

To leave the last word with Darrin Disley: “In respect of the SEGRO welcome, both myself and Horizon will do our best to bring other similarly situated bio-med companies to the site.
